We Offer Refractive Surgery

Refractive surgery is one of the types of treatment we provide for our patients. Dr. Ingram will examine your eyes and see if he thinks you would benefit from this surgery. We use refractive surgery to help our patients with their vision problems.

LASIK is one type of this surgery. LASIK is an effective treatment for farsighted patients, nearsighted patients, and patients with astigmatism. Dr. Ingram creates a flap in the cornea's outer layer to access the underlying tissue. Dr. Ingram then reshapes the tissue with a laser, so your cornea focuses light properly. The flap is what differentiates LASIK from other types of eye surgery.

Our Optometrist Performs PRK Surgery

Another type of eye surgery we perform at our practice is PRK surgery. Our patients from Forest Acres and elsewhere can benefit from this surgery. PRK is an acronym for photoreactive keratectomy. We utilize PRK surgery to correct mild or moderate farsightedness, nearsightedness, or astigmatism. PRK is similar to LASIK in that Dr. Ingram reshapes your cornea using a laser.

However, PRK only affects the surface of the cornea; it does not affect the underlying tissue. Dr. Ingram might also use computer imaging of your cornea during this process. Both procedures can be effective, though. It simply depends on the needs of the patient. Dr. Ingram examines your eyes specifically to determine which procedure will be better for you.

What Is the Standard Recovery Time for Refractive Surgery?

The amount of recovery time depends on which procedure you receive. If you get LASIK, your immediate recovery will take between six and twelve hours. The majority of patients can see clearly within 24 hours of refractive surgery.

Some patients in Forest Acres and Columbia, SC recover after a period of between two days and five days. Most patients see quite well following PRK surgery within roughly a month. You may not be completely healed from PRK for about three months, though.
